Wireless Leiden and Twitter

As you can see we have added a Twitter box to our site. Whenever you want to mention Wireless Leiden and its activities, nodes or whatever in a tweet, please use the hashtag #WirelessLeiden. The tweet will then also be visible on our site.
You could also place comments about nodes that are malfunctioning or (of course) praise the activities of Wireless Leiden on Twitter!

Nodes Zijloever en Rund upgraded

Volunteers of Wireless Leiden have upgraded two more nodes in the dark days before Christmas, after which they are conform our IRIS-concept:
- the node Zijloever at the Lage Morsweg 129, on the house for the elderly "Zijloever", and
- the node Rund at the Jan Vossensteeg / Rundermarkt.

These tow nodes are fully up and running again and completely embedded in our network, in their new configuration in which they comply to the high standards that are required by IRIS.

Node on ROC Lammenschans built

Volunteers of Wireless Leiden have built a new node on the (new) building of the ROC (school) at the Lammenschansweg on December 20, 2011.

As can bee seen on the picture, the building had to be continued until it was dark already! It can also be seen that a double layer of tiles was necessary to give the node the necessary stability in rough weather.

Live video Serious Request on Stadhuisplein

Wireless Leiden today set up a wireless connection to the big video screen on the City Hall square. Now the Serious Request event on the Beestenmarkt can be followed 'live'. Several attempts by the organizers to get a 'commercial' solution working were unsuccessfull. The Wireless Leiden connection was up and running in 30 minutes.

Thanks to our sponosr Advocatenkantoor DeClerqc for making the internet access available.

Radio Streaming from the Serious Request 'Houten Hut'

On the organizer's request we have set up a wireless connection from the "Houten Hut" to the Wireless Leiden network and, faciliating the live streaming of events in the Houten. The Houten Hut is located next to the Hooglandse Kerk. The students association dispuut Sjap Eisjedies of Quintus organise the Houten Hut event.

Webcam at Serious Request

Wireless Leiden facilitates webcam pictures and open wifi-internet during the so-called Serious Request event in Leiden. In cooperation with SLS Wonen and Webster University the necessary equipment has been installed near the Beestenmarkt. There are already a large number of wifi-hotspots around the Beestenmarkt, but they are not free to use. They do, however, cause a lot of noice and internet will not always be very fast, depending on your exact location.

Collecting data for the Heatmap

Our "Heatmap" has been announced before in these news items. To refresh your memory: On our Heatmap can be seen where exactly the environment is covered by the Wireless Leiden nodes. Some of our volunteers have already been walking or cycling through Leiden and Oegstgeest to collect data. They accomplish that task with our "Heatmapper©". This piece of technique consists of a netbook (or a different type of computer), with a standard WiFi- USB-stick and a GPS-unit, also connected with the netbook through a USB-port.

Wireless Leiden node during Serious Request

Wireless Leiden offers free internet during the "Serious Request" event of the Dutch Radio 3 station to visitors of the Beestenmarkt. On Friday, December 9, a Wireless Leiden node has been built, to make this possible, in the building (rented to Webster University) on the corner of Kort Rapenburg and Galgewater. On the location Wireless Leiden has also placed a webcam. See the pictures of the webcam elsewhere on our site.
